Update on Kael's therapy

It looks like we will be losing our developmental therapist. We went in for our appointment today, and she told me that she had put her two weeks notice in. There were two other ladies in the room, too. One was our new therapist that will be taking over when our current one leaves. The other lady did a recent speech consultation with Kael and wanted to share that she really thinks that Kael needs to start seeing a speech and language pathologist instead of a generic developmental therapist. Of course, she said we will need to go back to the doctor and get a referral for specialized services. Then they will be able to schedule an evaluation to determine whether or not he qualifies. I'm guessing this will take at least two months.

So, our appointment next week is cancelled, since our therapist is taking the day off for her birthday. Then, the following Friday will be the last time we will see her, at which time we will also meet with our service coordinator to rewrite our Individualized Family Service Plan with new goals for the next year. Then the new lady is on vacation for the next week, and we will start up with her the last week of August until we can get his new evaluation. It just seems like Kael is in for a lot of changes, and it's kind of sad because he seems very happy with what he is doing now. It is really frustrating how bureaucratic this whole Early Start system is. It seems like everyone is part of a different agency or program, and they have no way of communicating or doing things simultaneously.

On the other hand, I am sort of excited for the change. Even though Kael really enjoys his therapist and loves his playtime during his appointments, it doesn't seem like it's helping very much. Right now, it seems as if his sessions are almost completely child-led, which I can understand since she really specializes in infants...but, we already do that at home. I want him to be pushed a little, so that he starts making some progress. I feel like I almost do a better job of speech therapy at home. This new lady seems to be a lot more business-oriented, if you know what I mean. Even though Kael has made some progress while with this program, he is also seven months older than when he started. I have a feeling that as far as developmental milestones go, he is just as far behind, age-wise, as when we began. Here's hoping that these changes will finally get Kael motivated. I am hoping that by the time he would graduate from "Early Start" (third birthday), we won't need any sort of therapy anymore.

My Baby's First Black Eye

Kael fell off the couch, eye first, into the coffee table on Friday. It was so sad! It takes a lot to make this little guy cry, but he was upset for quite a while after this one. I tried to ice it, but he wasn't having any of it. I was sure it would be so swollen that he wouldn't be able to see out of it. Fortunately, it's just bruised and not too puffy, but it sure makes him look really tough.

Our First Week of Tot School

Tot School

17 months.

We had our first week of Tot school this week. Kael seemed to really enjoy most of it, and I was very happy to spend some extra time playing with him. I first found out about Tot school while searching for ideas regarding what to do with Kael during this next year, as Kai and I worked on school work. It seems so perfect because there will be plenty of activities to keep him occupied and also give me some time to just focus on Kael. Click here to learn more about Tot school.

Day 1: Exploring his activity cube. He especially liked the bead mazes and pounding on the music side.

Kael is already pretty good at this poppin' pals toy, but the red ones sometimes give him trouble. So, we pulled it out for some fine motor practice. He loves when one of the little animals pops up, and we say "hi" to it.

Practicing pouring outside by the little pool.

Oops, he missed.

Pouring into the big pool is much easier.

He also really liked playing with his bowling set. It was fun to watch him figure out what to do. At first he wanted to knock them down with his hand, and then he kept throwing the ball at the pins instead of rolling it.

Day 2 did not go as well. Kael really felt like running his own schedule and wasn't really interested in any of the activities that I brought out for him.

Here is the reaction I got when I suggested we look at one of his Elmo books.

Later in the day, I tried some more fine motor activities with the Cheerio activity book. He was way more interested in throwing the Cheerios than in actually doing any of the activities.

This action shot of him launching a Cheerio is a little blurry.

He did get really excited when we played with bubbles at the park, though even these old favorites did not hold his attention for long.

Day 3: The shape sorter, and Kaels' mind hard at work-

1) Getting frustrated that the star shape will not fit into the circle hole.

2) Ok, let's give another one a try

3) Yay, the circle going through the circle hole!

4) The triangle in the triangle hole....getting better at this.

And just for fun, here's a pic of Kael playing Peek-a-boo in his Nemo tent.

We had a great week! Check out what other little ones did for Tot school here.

Happy Birthday, Donald!

His actual birthday was yesterday, but I'm just getting around to posting these pics. Unfortunately, he had to work, but we had a fun little party with the the boys in between that and soccer practice. Kai was so excited. He couldn't wait for Daddy to get home, so that we could celebrate. All day he kept telling people it was his Dad's birthday, too. He spent quite a bit of time making the "perfect" birthday card. After practice, we headed up to Barona Casino, where they are giving away a free buffet for two on your birthday. It is such a good buffet, and we both had a really good dinner.

Here's a pic of the card that the boys made for Donald.

Happy Birthday! Love, Kai and Kael

We officially Have a Talker!

That's right! At 17 months, 1 week, Kael has said his first word. I had noticed for a few days he was working on the "sh" sound, and then on Saturday, he went to visit the fish tank. He loves to run up to it to point at the fish and squeal, but this time he said "eesh." At first I couldn't tell if it was an accident, but he kept saying it! We were so surprised and excited! His highchair sits right next to the fish tank, so he has had plenty of opportunity to talk to his little friends. He will not say his word for a picture of a fish yet, but he does every time he sees a live one. Now, if only his next word would be "Mama," I would be beyond happy! Here is a pic of Kael visiting some fishy friends at a koi pond at a restaurant this weekend.

Another Thunderbolts Season Kicks Off!

Kai had his first soccer game for the summer season yesterday. This is his second season as a Thunderbolt. The game went really well, and it looked like all of the kids' practice had paid off.

Kael really likes to practice too!
